If you’re a frustrated sailor, why not live out your dreams with a visit to the legendary Jeanie Johnston Tall Ship & Famine Museum. Get a taste of the trials millions faced as they sort to escape famine by crossing the Atlantic on voyages that could last months.

The replica of the Jeanie Johnston, completed in 2002 for a total cost of nearly 14 million euros, sits docked at Custom House Quay in Dublin city centre with tours on the hour during peak season. Don’t miss the haunting Famine memorial nearby then step aboard the three masted long ship and imagine making the arduous crossing to the New World.

The Jeanie Johnston made sixteen voyages to North America and Canada between 1848 and 1855, often carrying in excess of 200 passengers, and never once lost a soul on board. Even as she sank in 1858, taking timber between Hull and Quebec, her crew were all rescued as she slowly went under.

The Replica, displacing 518 tons and measuring 47m in length, was christened by President of Ireland Mary McAleese on 7th May 2000, before embarking on a thirty two city tour around the US and Canada in 2003.

Although a replica, the Jeanie Johnston is a faithful recreation lovingly built on oak beams by international teams of young people, under the guidance of experienced shipwrights, to capture the essence of 19th century seafaring at its most dramatic to the amazement and delight all who visit her.
